South San Francisco, San Mateo County
Huge white concrete letters on a hillside spell out South San Francisco The Industrial City, a sign installed in 1929 and visible from the freeway and from planes on approach. The town was founded around 1890 by meatpackers led by Gustavus Swift, and steel mills and shipyards followed. The hill behind the letters is now a city park with trails.
